Mendes was a Brazilian musician who blended bossa nova with jazz and funk. He is best known for the popularization of the song "Mas Que Nada" with his band Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. Mendes performed as a guest keyboardist with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra on July 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 1978, for the Summer of Stars series.
