Interview with Leland McPhie
McPhie was born in 1914 and attended Colton Union High School in Colton, California, San Bernardino Valley College, and San Diego State College, where he set the school record in the 220-yard dash and long jump in 1936. He joined the United States Army and fought in World War II before returning to finish his degree at San Diego State. He joined the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, from which he retired in 1969, competing in a track meet at the age of 100. McPhie died in 2015.
