The Hotel Brewster, shown in this hand-tinted photographic picture postcard, was built in 1888 on the southeast corner of 4th Avenue and C Street, across from the U. S. Grant Hotel, by Horace I. Brewster. It had San Diego's first passenger elevator. This view shows the cupola that was an original feature of the hotel but that disappeared in 1910. Another card in this collection, PC-000-821, shows the hotel later and without the cupola. The hotel was demolished in 1934. The publisher, M. Rieder, only operated from 1901-1915, limiting the possible earliest date of this postcard. The latest date is limited by the "undivided back" of this postcard, a style that changed in 1907 when postal regulations allowed the allotment of space on the left side of postcards for return addresses or messages. This is the reason the photograph does not fill the whole of the image side of the card: if there had been a message it would have had to be written here. The San Diego History Center has a photograph dated 1892 showing a cable car passing in front (#3441).
