Kenilworth Inn, Ramona, California, US

The Kenilworth Inn in Ramona, San Diego County, California, is shown sometime between the addition of its second story (by 1910) and its destruction by fire in 1943. It was opened in 1887 at 6th and Main Streets as the Ramona Hotel by Milton Santee (1835-1901), using bricks made by Augustan Barnett in 1886. Santee changed the name of the town from Nuevo in 1886 after purchasing a large block of land in the area, to capitalize on the fame of Helen Hunt Jackson's novel "Ramona" (1884). According to one account, Santee brought Ida May Roques Kearney from Santa Ysabel to manage his hotel and restaurant, and she became its proprietor. The hotel was renamed the Ricker before Kearney bought it and dubbed it the Kenilworth. The photograph reproduced here looks much the same as a photograph in the collection of the San Diego History Center (#3549) dated 1910, except that the main palm in this picture appears to be taller than it was in the phtograph. Another History Center photograph (3549-B) shows the hotel from a different angle in 1915.
