Curt Teich C. T. Art-Colortone
The Sky Room opened in 1940 at the top of the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego. At 310 feet, the hotel on San Diego's Cortez Hill (then Ash Street Hill) was the tallest building from its opening in 1927 until 1963. Glass windows all around the top of this building offered a 360-degree view of San Diego for patrons of this dining room and bar, including at that time San Diego Bay, Point Loma, Mt. Helix, Balboa Park, and Old Town, according to the cartoon occupying the right bottom of this advertisement. In the cartoon, note that the North Island and South Island of Coronado (sometimes called "Coronado" by itself) were nearly separated by the Spanish Bight in 1940. The Silver Strand or narrow beach connecting Coronado to the mainland is labelled. The message portion of this card says the Hotel was "Benton operated." This card was made by Curt Teich, by the "C.T. Art-Colortone" process, number OB-H943, containing a code by which the card was dated (B=1940s, 0=year).
