The makers of this type of photographic reproduction process, called "Plastichrome," first applied for a trademark in 1965, helping to establish the oldest possible date of this picture postcard. Marston's Department Store is visible by the lettering on the building at Fifth Avenue and C Street (from 1912) toward the upper middle of the map. This store was demolished in 1969. The photograph may have been taken from the El Cortez Hotel, which is on a hill facing the downtown area and looking down Seventh Avenue. Seventh Avenue is the heavily lit one-way street on the left angling from left to right. Nearly at the end of this street is the Home Tower (later Chase Building, built in 1963) on the left at 707 Broadway, and the Bank of America building at 625 Broadway immediately to its right. On the immediate right of the Bank of American building is the San Diego Savings & Trust building, recognizable by its lit cupola. Also visible is the Pacific Telephone building on Sixth Avenue.
