This is a black-and-white version of another picture postcard in this collection (PC-000-616) published by a company that was active from 1914-1934, limiting the date range of this item. It shows a large coastal area encompassing all of San Diego and La Jolla, San Diego and Mission Bays, eastward past the Cleveland National Forest and Morena Dam, and south to one mile north of the Mexican border. Ream Field, labeled on the right-hand edge just below the vertical center, was named in 1918; the San Diego and Arizona Railway was not completed until 1919 (dotted lines can be seen heading north on the right of the map toward the terminus of El Centro), and the Lake Murray Dam on the other colored map almost in the middle of the card toward the upper left is here shown as the "La Mesa Reservoir." Another difference between the black-and-white and (presumably later) colored version is that this card shows a "US Marine Camp" in Balboa Park missing as a label in the colored version. The Marine Barracks, Balboa Park, lasted from 1914 to 1921, thus confining the production of this card to the years 1918-1921. This is a real photo postcard (RPPC). This process allowed both amateur and professional photographers to take a "snap shot" to a photo finishing shop and have it printed on a postcard backing. These photo papers were usually identified in the stampbox of the postcard. In this case the Kodak paper began to be manufactured in 1906.
