Azo photo paper
This picture postcard appears to be a photograph showing Bishop Thomas James Conaty (1847-1915) "and priests on way to mass." There are no other notations on the postcard except for a pencilled note in the address portion, "S. D. Jl '11," probably meaning "San Diego, July 1911." Conaty was bishop of the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles from 1903-1915, having previously been the second Rector of the Catholic University of America while a priest. Bishop Conaty appears to be the man in the middle of the back seat facing the camera. His death occurred in Coronado, California, a resort community on a peninsula across San Diego Bay from San Diego. Another copy of this postcard in the collection of the San Diego History Center is labelled on the front in white hand printing: "Bishop Conaty (+) Church Processional, July 1911 Ground-breaking Panama-California Exposition, San Diego, California." This is a Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) made with Azo photo paper (as evidenced in the stampbox on the back of this card). The Real Photo process allowed photographers to take a "snap shot" and have it finished at a photo shop that printed it out on postcard backing for mailing. This type of Azo photo paper was made from 1904-1918.
