The Painted Desert exhibit (also known as the Indian Village) was at the end of the Isthmus at the north entrance during the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. It displayed Native Americans living in different "villages" representing their tribal groupings and typical building style. The main groups participating were from New Mexico. The exhibit was also known by the name of its sponsor, the Santa Fe Railroad. The Exposition was held in San Diego's Balboa Park after the completion of the Panama Canal.
