Botanical Building and Lagoon, Balboa Park, San Diego, California
The Lily Pond (Laguna de las Flores, lagoon, Laguna de Espejo, or Reflecting Pool) and entrance to Botanical Building and conservatory designed by the architectural firm of Bertram Goodhue (1881-1943), for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. The footbridge at the boundary between the adjoining "lagunita" and "laguna" or lagoon was built at the same time (white line in front ofthe door of the building), along with the north and south pond and the gardens. The roof of the Botanical Building is redwood lath, open to the weather, so the building is sometimes called the "Lath House." The exposition was held in San Diego's Balboa Park to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal.
