Bill Reid
Constructed for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, the Old Globe Theatre opened on May 29 of that year, a replica of Shakespeare's original Globe Playhouse. It was home to the San Diego National Shakespeare Festival and San Diego's community theatre before it burned on March 8, 1978 in an arson fire. The players and festival and the festival's founder Craig Noel, after using other venues in the meantime, returned to the reconstructed Old Globe in January 1982, although Festival performances continued to be outdoors on the Festival Stage.
