The title at the bottom left calls this desert "The American Sahara." A paragraph on the back explains the coloration of the sand near the road as due to "banking and oiling the sand" to reduce drifting. It describes this 10-mile stretch of road as a "recently" completed highway across desert where the "Old Plank Road" had gone before. The number on the back of the card is 112857, which, according to the guide maintained by the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, translates to 1926, although the plaque at the site of the Old Plank Road this highway replaced gives its last usage as 1927.
