This hand-tinted picture postcard shows the original building with add-ons constructed for the San Diego Normal School from 1898-1910 (original portion centered here dedicated 1899) centered in the far background. This building, designed by Irving Gill (1870-1936), continued to be used as the school changed its name to the State Teachers' College, until the Montezuma Mesa location was occupied in 1931. Mission Cliff Park or Gardens, as it was known, was a creation of the San Diego Cable Railway Company, owned by John D. Spreckels (1853-1926). It was in existence from 1898 to 1942 and was the original destination of the pipe organ that became the center of the Spreckels Organ Pavillion. The publisher's number on the back of this postcard is 2951, and the Curt Teich number is shown on PC-000-983B (the back of this postcard). The same photograph with slight differences is shown on PC-000-985 and PC-000-986.
