"Natural Color Reproduction" picture postcard of Casa de Pico, a motel in "Old San Diego"
Hester & Smith, Inc., San Diego, California
The Casa de Pico Motor Hotel, represented in this "Natural Color" photographic "Reproduction," was designed by architect Richard Requa (1881-1941) at the urging of San Diego entrepreneur and civic leader George Marston (1850-1946). Marston also lent money to the first owners, Frank and Eloise Cardwell. The opening was in 1940 in San Diego's Old Town, now a state historic park. The motel was named after an original Old Town structure called Casa de Pico. This home of the mother of the last governor of Alta California (Mexico), Pio Pico (1801-1894), fell gradually into ruins by 1914. The motel operated in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and the El Pico Dining Room opened in 1942 adjacent to the motel, later renamed El Nopal in 1949. After the acquisition of the motel in 1968 as part of the state historic park, the State of California folded it into the Fiesta de Reyes complex on Juan Street between Wallace and Mason Streets.
