Immediately in front of the "Steamer Pier" at which a steamship ferry is docked, the Hotel Metropole stands in Avalon in an enhanced condition after its original construction in 1887 by George Shatto, who had just bought around 99 percent of the Island. Additions by new island owners in 1893 and 1897 included a ballroom. The hotel, along with one-third to one-half the town, burned in a fire that started on November 29, 1915. The back of this postcard has the words "Post Card" and is not divided into message and address portions, placing its manufacture between 1901 and 1907.
