Picture postcard of aerial view of County Hospital, San Diego, California
Until 1880, San Diego County contracted with the lowest bidder for care of indigents. In that year, the County established the County Hospital and Poor Farm. The first building in 1889 was on the south side of Mission Valley, but the hospital moved in 1904 to a site adjacent to the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center at Hillcrest. UCSD took over the County Hospital sometime in the 1970s.
