My dear Mrs Halsey:-
I have your favor of October 27th, and under the circumstances am glad the matter came up before too much time had elapsed.
Were we sure that we would not at any time be crowded in our dining room I would make no objection to your son eating in the public dining room at the reduced rates we have quoted; but if we should establish a precedent by allowing him to eat there without charging full rates it would get us into trouble with a great many other boarders. Until such time as we deemed it necessary, of course we would say nothing; but when, in our opinion, it would be to the interest of the hotel to enforce this regulation we would feel it a duty to ask an increased compensation.
As stated above, we do not know that this question will ever be raised, but it must be plainly understood that such circumstances may arise.
If under the circumstances you feel free to come we will be very much pleased to have you. Of course, we would make no objections to you having your daughter eat with you on Sunday mornings. The point I am making is, simply to avoid establishing a precedent that will prove very expensive to us in a great many other cases.
