This is a video created by Polly Card and submitted to the Student Research Symposium of 2018. Card, a participant from the College of Education, won the Library Award. The video provides a context for the experiences of Marcos, Devin, Dmitri, Terri, and Omar as they attempted to navigate community colleges toward educational goals. J. Luke Wood, PhD and Bridget Herrin, PhD supply some statistics about post-secondary education. Frank Harris III, PhD introduces segments on "Barriers" and "Stereotypes," the latter including television clips as well as statements by the subjects. Wood introduces a segment on "Work," with further explanation by Marissa Vasquez Urias, EdD. "Commute" is carried by Dmitri, who describes his four-hour cross-border travel each way to school. Wood also introduces "Educators" after which Dmitri talks about "Mentors." The same segment has video clips, introduces Kendrick Dial and contains other subjects. "What Works" has Wood and several subjects. Credits at the end include graphics and animation by Joseph Alvarado, Esperanza Aguirre, and Shannon Tang; camera operators Ananda Ortanez and Michelle Nguyen; production assistants Esperanza Aguirre and Jake Bohringer; and original score by Jerik Centeno. Card offers "special thanks" to Ryan Irvan, Marva Cappello, James Frazee, Eric Zentmyer, Jacob Garcia, Instructional Technology Services (San Diego State University), Randy Reinholz, Joe Johnson, Michelle Ruiz, and Sean Hauze. Subjects were from the greater San Diego area and Tijuana, Mexico.
