Interviewer: Brockman, Charles
In this interview, Clayton describes his experiences in the theatre, including his acting experiences with the Old Globe Theatre. Clayton was born in Kansas City, Missouri. While there, he went with his father, a newspaperman, to the scene of a crime involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pretty Boy Floyd, and later he wrote a book about the incident. His theater career began in 1935. He came to stay San Diego in 1938, having worked for Midwest newspapers. Before arriving at the Old Globe he had been with the road company of "Three Men and a Horse," so he was hired to act in that production. He did script writing for radio and ABC Broadcasting, in addition to writing about downtown theatres, and also worked at Marston's Department Store during World War II, since he had been rejected for induction into the Armed Forces.
