Under a photograph of the "American Comedy Four (four men, one in blackface), the names of the lyricist Alfred Bryan and composer Al. Piantadosi are displayed toward the left. On the right is an illustration of a white-haired woman hugging her grown son as she sees in her mind's eye a scene of battle. Photographs of other performers appear in the frame at left in different printings or editions of this cover. The Library of Congress places this song under the subject heading of "protest songs." Although this image is only of the cover illustration, San Diego State University Special Collections and Archives does hold the sheet music within.
