Chase's long-awaited furlough is being spent in a "G.I. Hospital." He says Kansas is a "sea of mud," used by Kansans for "everything, farms, roads, airport runways and chewing gum." This is what Hitler is "up against in Russia." It hurts his eyes to write, so after mentioning that "bootleg liquor is 5 bucks a pint," he signs off.
