Swank is serving at the "Station Hospital," having arrived there by way of the Medical Field Service School at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. After receiving his commission as "2nd Lieutenant Medical Administrative Corps" in September, Swank finds himself with fellow San Diego State College alumnus James Phalen at Vancouver. He is grateful for the Aztec Service Men's News Letter.
