Atkins was at this time a member of the San Diego City Council. She went on to become speaker of the California State Assembly, the first acknowledged lesbian to hold that position, as well as the positions of acting mayor of San Diego and acting governor of California. "Big Mike" Phillips was a member of LGBT advisory boards and in 2007 became president of the board of the Imperial Court de San Diego.
