Real Photo Picture Postcard of U. S. Grant Hotel and Horton Plaza, San Diego, California
Noko photo paper
The Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) process allowed amateur or professional photographers to take a "snap-shot" and take it to a photofinisher to get postcards ready for mailing. The photographer is unknown, but the subject is the U. S. Grant Hotel, first opened in 1910, with Harrison Albright (1866-1933) as architect. The photograph was taken from across the street, through the perspective of Horton Plazal. In the plaza can be seen (far right at bottom) the electrical fountain created for the spot by Irving (1870-1936) and Louis Gill (1885-1969. This hotel underwent a slight name change to The US Grant, but its place on the National Register of Historic Sites ensured its survival with limited changes to the outside of the building. On the back of the card, surrounding the stamp box, is the logo of Noko, manufacturer of a photographic silver-chloride printing out paper often toned this warm brown, with a postcard back, made only rom 1907-1929.
