Picture postcard of U. S. Grant Hotel from Horton Plaza, San Diego, California
The U. S. Grant Hotel first opened in 1910, with Harrison Albright (1866-1933) as architect. The photograph was taken from inside Horton Plaza, which preceded the hotel. The electric fountain designed for the Plaza by Irving (1870-1936) and Louis Gill (1885-1969) can just be seen on the far left. This hotel underwent a slight name change to The US Grant, but its place on the National Register of Historic Sites ensured its survival with limited changes to the outside of the building. It was built by U. S. Grant, Jr., as a memorial to his presidential father, Ulysses S. Grant.
