C. T. Photochrom (Curt Teich)
This hand-tinted color picture postcard shows a view of the U. S. Grant Building from Fourth Avenue, with Horton Plaza and a streetcar on Fourth. The U. S. Grant Hotel first opened in 1910, with Harrison Albright (1866-1933) as architect. This hotel underwent a slight name change to The US Grant, but its place on the National Register of Historic Sites ensured its survival with limited changes to the outside of the building. Horton Plaza, which preceded the hotel, is on the left, across Broadway from it. In the plaza can be seen (at left bottom, with a palm tree in front of it) the electrical fountain created for the spot by Irving (1870-1936) and Louis Gill (1885-1969). The Curt Teich number on the back of the card (A-32870) has been decoded to the year 1913.
