Panama-California Exposition of 1915

The U. S. Grant Hotel first opened in 1910, with Harrison Albright (1866-1933) as architect. The photograph was taken from across the street and includes Horton Plaza. In the plaza can be seen (at right, with a red dome) the electrical fountain created for the spot by Irving (1870-1936) and Louis Gill (1885-1969). A streetcar of the California Car type is shown in front of the hotel. This hotel underwent a slight name change to The US Grant, but its place on the National Register of Historic Sites ensured its survival with limited changes to the outside of the building. The American National Bank, seen here as the tallest building on the far right with the flag, was organized by Louis J. Wilde in 1904, with U. S. Grant, Jr. (the builder of the U. S. Grant Hotel) on its board of directors. The bank building shown here, designed by Franklin P. Burnham (1853-1909), opened in 1911 at 1007 Fifth Avenue. The bank later became the First National Trust and Savings bank, and following that the building was owned by Wells Fargo Bank, vacated in 1984. After its sale in 1999, the bank building was divided into condominiums as the Broadway Lofts.
