Lafayette Hotel-Motel

The Lafayette Hotel, a city block as shown in this aerial view, was added to the U. S. National Register of Historic Places after it reopened in 2012. It was first opened in 1946 by San Diego developer Larry Imig as the Imig Manor, designed by architect Frank Hope Sr. (1901-1994). The pool shown in the center of the image holds a plaque stating that it was designed by Johnny Weissmuller of "Tarzan" fame. By 1949 Conrad Hilton and associates bought the site, and renamed it the Hotel Manor by 1950, renaming it again in 1952 to the Lafayette Hotel. In 1953 a motel building was constructed on the south side, although the difference between this card and PC-000-813 in this collection, labelled "Hotel Manor," is not visible. The site changed hands multiple times, remaining a hotel until 1965. From then until 1995 the property hosted offices except for the continuation of the Red Fox Steak House in the northeastern corner. In 1995 the site was purchased by InnSuites. When it was sold again, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune article of October 6, 2012, the buyer restored it, along with the name Lafayette Hotel.
