The Benham Company, publishers of this hand-tinted postcard, operated from 1910 to 1915, limiting the possible date range of this card. A photograph in the possession of the San Diego History Center (#11), dated 1911, looks the same, taken from across the street from the left side of the building instead of the right, as here. A seller dated this postcard 1911. The Lanier Hotel was designed by William Hebbard (1863-1930) for Mrs. Dora Lanier on the site of the old Marston house (George Marston, 1850-1946, San Diego entrepreuneur and civic leader), which Marston had sold to her in 1907. A postcard showing the sun parlor of the hotel was mailed in 1923, so it may have been still standing at that time. The lobby of the hotel is shown in PC-000-829 and PC-000-830 in this collection.
