Picture postcard of Casa de Pico Motor Hotel in San Diego, California
Casa de Pico, San Diego, California, US
The Casa de Pico Motor Hotel, shown here on a vintage multi-view lithographed postcard in a sepia tone, was designed by architect Richard Requa (1881-1941) at the urging of San Diego entrepreneur and civic leader George Marston (1850-1946). Marston also lent money to the first owners, Frank and Eloise Cardwell. The opening was in 1940 in San Diego's Old Town, now a state historic park. It was named after an original Old Town structure called Casa de Pico. This home of the mother of the last governor of Alta California (Mexico), Pio Pico (1801-1894), fell gradually into ruins by 1914. The motel operated in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and the El Pico Dining Room opened in 1942 adjacent to the motel, later renamed El Nopal in 1949. After the acquisition of the motel in 1968 as part of the state historic park, the State of California folded it into the Fiesta de Reyes complex on Juan Street between Wallace and Mason Streets. This picture postcard looks very much like the "Cardwell Motor Court" card (PC-000-826) made for the Cardwells' second San Diego motel close by.
