Back of postcard showing home of U. S. Grant, Jr., in San Diego. In 1901, the U. S. Post Office allowed the use of the words "post card" to be printed on postcards, but still did not allow any messages to be written on the front of the card until 1907. Although the postmark of this card shows 1912, the style of the card indicates that it was made earlier. The same house is shown in a hand-tinted card with a similar undivided back and a different publisher.
