This is a black-and-white picture postcard printed during the period when the U. S. Post Office allowed private printers to use the words "post card," but did not yet allow messages to be written on the front of the card (1901-1907). It may be a Real Photo postcard, since this Kodak process was invented in 1903, and microscopic analysis reveals no typical printing dots. It is the same photograph, printed in Germany, as on a hand-tinted card, PC-000-728. This "undivided back" card shows the San Diego home of the son of United States president Ulysses S. Grant, U. S. Grant, Jr. The Havermale Mansion at the corner of Eighth and Ash Streets was purchased by the Grants in 1893. The house was built in 1887-1888 by Ora Hubbell, designed by the same architects who created the Hotel Coronado, James W. and Merritt Reid. It was demolished in 1927 to make way for the El Cortez Hotel.
