circa 1912

San Diego's first hook-and-ladder truck was acquired in 1911. In this photograph of the Gaslamp District, streetcar tracks are prominent, and there is a California car streetcar in about the middle. On the lower right side of the photograph, at the back end of the truck, is a partly yellow sign for the Manhattan restaurant and hotel. That places this photograph east of Fifth Street, with the restaurant on the north side of D, the truck facing south, and the view looking west along D Street (later Broadway). This same picture postcard is also represented as PC-000-659, but with a postmark of 1912 and a unique message.
