The California Car type of streetcars pictured in this hand-tintred picture-postcard photograph are distinguished by the type of roof and the largely open car. These cars, belonging to the San Diego Electric Railway Company (SDERy), were phased out by the company's owner, John D. Spreckels (1853-1926), after 24 Class 1 cars (completely enclosed) were ordered in 1912. Aside from the effects of weather and winds, women in hobble skirts could not get on or off the streetcar's elevated platforms. Here, toward of the front of the streetcar on the left, one can see women riding, and a set of steps in the middle of the car here carries men. The publisher's number on the back is 6505. M. Rieder was in business from 1901-1915. This is the same photograph as on PC-000-653, except larger, with less saturated hues.
