Kodak photo paper
Black-and-white street scene of Fifth Avenue and Broadway Street. A pencil marking on the back indicates that this either represents or was acquired in 1931. In this shot, the suprastructure of the streetcar lines for the Class 1 cars can be seen, absent in so many enhanced photographs. Baranov's (jewelers), whose establishment can be seen on the right in the middle, with a vertical sign, was in the Gaslamp disrict, which is apparently the location of this shot. "Farley's," on the sign on the left, was a clothing store. The traffic signals at the bottom and middle left are called "semaphore traffic signals" and were popular in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. The prominent store with the "Lion" sign on the side wall in the middle was the Lion men's clothing store in the Fox Building at 6th and Broadway, built in 1929 by William Templeton Johnson. In 1934, women's clothing was added to the stock. This is a Real Photo Postcard, a Kodak process that, starting in 1906, allowed amateur and professional photographers alike to take a "snap-shot" to a finishing shop and have it printed onto a postcard back. The stampbox on the back identifies this is a Kodak photo paper.
