The congregation of the First Methodist Episcopal Church was absorbed into this church in 1964, now known as the First United Methodist Church.
Several picture postcards in this collection feature the earlier church structure built in 1906 as the First Methodist Church, housing a congregation founded in 1869, said to be the first protestant church in San Diego County. In subsequent times it was known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church. The Methodist Episcopal Church was one of the three branches of American Methodism that came together to form "The Methodist Church" in 1939, a group that merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church. The publisher number on the back of this card is 53096.
