A mature Indian elephant at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego, California
Kodachrome by G. E. Kirkpatrick
This "Animal Color Series" picture postcard "from the San Diego Zoo" identifies the animal in the picture portion of the postcard as an "Indian Elephant." In this photograph, a mature elephant is standing with its trunk between its front legs. Only the front half of the animal can be seen, facing to the left in front of and standing on foliage. This may be a female, since it lacks tusks. Indian elephants are a subspecies of the Asian elephant, which is classified in 2013 as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
