A female llama and her young in front of the fence around their enclosure at the San Diego Zoo
Hester & Smith, Inc., San Diego, California, US
This picture postcard from the "Animal Color Series from the San Diego Zoo" identifies the animals in the picture section as "Llama and Young" from the "Andes Mtns., So. Amer." Female llamas are known as "dams" when mothers, and their young are called "crias." In 2013, llamas are domestic animals who have no natural range, but they are found mainly along the middle of the West Coast of South America (The Andes), having been domesticated by the Quechua people from the wild guanacos.
