The Cabrillo Freeway, California State Route 163, as it traverses part of Balboa Park, San Diego
California State Route 163 or Cabrillo Freeway begins at A and Ash Streets in San Diego and crosses Interstate 5 before it begins the 4 km (2.5 miles) of freeway that follows Cabrillo Canyon through Balboa Park and under the Cabrillo Bridge (not shown in this photograph) north to Miramar. The Balboa Park portion was designated a State Scenic Highway in 2003, and is also a designated historic route. Built between 1942 and 1947, it was the first freeway in San Diego County, initially the most southern end of US Route 395.
