Plaza del Pacifico, later Plaza de Panama, Balboa Park, San Diego, with California Tower
This postcard shows a view from the southeast side of the Plaza de Panama, formerly known as the Plaza del Pacifico. The most distant buildings, at the western entrance to Balboa Park, are part of the California Quadrangle--the California Tower and California Building (the dome glimpsed immediately to the right of the tower). These were designed by Bertram Goodhue (1869-1924) and built for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. The California Building subsequently became the San Diego Museum of Man. On the right, toward the viewer from the Tower, on the northwest corner of the Plaza is the Science and Education Building, later the Palace of Photography during the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935, the Medical Arts Building (1936), the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building (1939), and finally demolished in the 1960s. On the southwest corner of the Plaza, the south side of El Prado street, is the Indian Arts Building, also built for the 1915 Exposition, known in 1916 as the Russia and Brazil Building, and renamed the House of Charm in 1935. The House of Charm was razed and recreated in1996.
