Botanical Building and Lily Pond, with botanical gardens, Balboa Park, San Diego
The Lily Pond and entrance to the Botanical Building and conservatory designed by the architectural firm of Bertram Goodhue (1881-1943), for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. The footbridge at the boundary between the adjoining "lagunita" and "laguna" or lagoon was built at the same time (white structure in front of trees centered between the pool and the building), along with the north and south pond and the gardens. The roof of the Botanical Building is redwood lath, open to the weather, so the building is sometimes called the "Lath House." The exposition was held in San Diego's Balboa Park to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal.
