The Sand Hills or Algodones Sand Dunes were known also as "The American Sahara." United States Highway 80, the first paved road across them, was built around 1926 and eventually supplanted by Interstate 8. The number on the bottom right is 112856, which, according to the guide maintained by the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, translates to 1926. The publisher's number in the lower left margin is 405.
