Home of Hancock Banning, Descanso Canyon, Santa Catalina Island, California
circa 1910
Enter a free text date.
The building is not identified, but, according to the Los Angeles County Public Library collection on Santa Catalina Island, this postcard shows the home of one of the sons of Banning, California namesake Phineas Banning (1830-1885) who bought Catalina in 1891. Hancock Banning (1865-1925), along with his brothers William and Joseph, built and/or developed much of the infrastructure of Catalina Island, including roads, steamship access, and the City of Avalon. The back of the card bears the pencilled notation "J.B. 1913," but the date given by the Library has been used here. Also, although this unsent card has a divided back, only the return address was allowed on the short left side.
