C.T. Photochrom, Chicago, Illinois [Curt Teich]
This hand-colored picture postcard presents a unique coloration of the home of Hancock Bannng (1865-1925) in Descanso Canyon, also pictured on PC-001-074. Banning was one of the three sons of Phineas Banning (1830-1885, the namesake of Banning, California) who bought Santa Catalina Island in 1891 and built and developed many of the roads and other access, as well as the City of Avalon. This home was built in 1895 and moved by 1918 to make room for the Hotel St. Catherine, erected on the same spot. The number on the back of the card is R-55096, which, according to the guide maintained by the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, translates to 1915.
