C.T. & Co., Chicago, Illinois [Curt Teich]
The history and tourist invitation on this 4 X 6-inch portion of a 34-inch-long foldout postcard ends with the acquisition of the island in 1919 by William Wrigley, Jr. Succinctly, Santa Catalina Island has been in private hands since 1846, when it was deeded by the Mexican government to Thomas M. Robbins. In 1975, 88% of it was given to the Catalina Island Conservancy to preserve the island's wildlands. Except for 1% in other hands, the rest continued to be the property of the Santa Catalina Island Company, incorporated in 1894 by the Banning Brothers, then owners of the island. That company operates the developed parts of the island, including the country club, golf course, hotels, etc. Two numbers appear on this card: D-294 and 37775. The first belongs to Curt Teich, and the second to the publisher. According to the guide maintained by the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, D-294 represents the year 1929.
