Big Bear Dam on Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino Mountains, California
Color: Bolty
There are two dams in this picture: the small structure in the foreground being the remnant of the 1884 dam, and the one behind it the one completed in 1911. The description on the back of the postcard avers that the larger dam "transformed a small lake into the present" seven-mile-long one. According to the scope note for the Frye & Smith Photograph Collection at the San Diego History Center, their photographs were taken from the 1930s to the 1950s. The back of the card bears the number 5259, and there is a logo of a United States highway sign with the initials "F&S" on the inside, the word "Highway" above it, and "Color by Bolty" below it. This suggests that Frye & Smith had a "Highway" series of postcards.
