Mercy Hospital, San Diego, California, US

The oldest hospital in San Diego, Mercy Hospital was founded by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy in San Diego in 1890 as the St. Joseph's Dispensary, with the first building opened in 1891 at Eighth Avenue and University. In 1915 a school of nursing was accredited there, and in 1924 the hospital was renamed. In 1932 the school was renamed Mercy College of Nursing, closed in 1970. In 1924-1928, I. E. Lovelace was the architect and W. E. Kier Construction the builder of a new hospital at the Fifth Avenue site, with the last wing (on the right in this picture postcard) added in 1928. In 1966 this new building was built. Mercy Hospital joined the Scripps system in 1995, renamed Scripps Mercy Hospital. The hospital was remodeled in 2004 and in 2010 broke new ground for buildings to double the size of the facility. The publisher's number on the back is 36652.
