San Diego entrepreneur and civic leader John D. Spreckels (1853-1926) hired Harrison Albright (1866-1932) in 1906 to build his home on Coronado "Island" overlooking Glorietta Bay. Completed in 1908, the Spreckels Mansion, as it was known, had additions made to it in 1913 and was used as the family home until Spreckels died in 1926. Later owners made additions to the property before 1975, when three San Diego businesspeople purchased it for renovation as a hotel, with an eye to restoration to its 1920s appearance. In 1977 it was designated a Coronado Historic Landmark by the Coronado Historical Association. The card publisher began operations in 1969.
