This is a hand-tinted picture postcard printed during the period when the U. S. Post Office allowed private printers to use the words "post card," but did not yet allow messages to be written on the front of the card (1901-1907). This "undivided back" card shows the home of the son of United States president Ulysses S. Grant, U. S. Grant, Jr. The Havermale Mansion at the corner of Eighth and Ash Streets was purchased by the Grants in 1893. The house was built in 1887-1888 by Ora Hubbell, designed by the same architects who created the Hotel Coronado, James W. and Merritt Reid. It was demolished in 1927 to make way for the El Cortez Hotel.
