Prominent in the middle of this hand-tinted picture postcard is the Hotel Churchill, at 827 C Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. The hotel opened in 1915, built by Orrin Churchill, with the timing meant to coincide with the opening of the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 in Balboa Park. Balboa Park can be seen in the background of this photograph of the eastern portion of San Diego's downtown area, near the southern end of Highway 163.
